Lesser Spotted Gullion | Mountain Ways Ireland DEV

Lesser Spotted Gullion

County Armagh, Northern Ireland

Overview

This walk initially follows unused forestry tracks traversing and zig zagging up Slieve Gullions western slopes.

Because this side of the mountain is off the beaten track there is much more of a chance to see the native wildlife of the Ring of Gullion and South Armagh.

Red squirrels, foxes, rabbits, badgers and the elusive pine marten are very hard to see but be assured that there’s a healthy growing population in the woods that surround us.

This is where you’ll have the best chance of spotting the feral mountain goats with herds of up to 60 or 80 living off the mountain herbs and plant life. You may well smell them before you see them!

We leave the roads and tracks behind and begin to climb to Gullion’s summit, visiting the highest passage tomb In Ireland, around 5,500 years old.

After tracking across to the lake we go off track and follow the heathery slopes home via the king’s chair with great views of Mullaghbane valley and the ring of Gullion far below.

A great day full of history, heritage, flora and fauna.
